Reza Shahabi, a member of the Executive Committee of the Trade Union of the Tehran and Suburbs Vahed Bus Company, was ordered to return to prison on August 8th.
Reza Shahabi, who was receiving medical treatment outside prison, was ordered back in jail by the prosecutor seeking to seize assets for his bail. He is now in Rejai Shahr prison.
Reza Shahabi was originally arrested on June 12th 2010 while driving one of the Vahed Company’s buses and transporting passengers. He then spent 19 months in solitary confinement in Evin Prison’s ward (section) 209. He was then sentenced to six years in prison, fined 7.5 million tomans (€5036 at the time) and banned from trade union activities for five years.
The upsurge in strikes and other forms of protests by workers, the exploited and the oppressed in Iran has led to an increase in arrests and other repressive steps against any class or layer that demands its basic rights. As ever, the Iranian regime sees the working class, and in particular the leaders and militants of the class, as a big threat to the dictatorship. Recently other well-known labour activists in Iran, including Esmail Abdi, leader of the Teachers’ Trade Association, and Mohsen Omrani, a teachers’ activist, have been rearrested. Many workers of the Haft Tappeh Sugar Cane Company have also been arrested.
