Iran lorry drivers’ third strike: resilience against state repression

The third strike of Iran’s lorry drivers is a nationwide movement covering over 52 cities and towns. This is despite the Iranian regime’s response to their second strike: arresting around 150 lorry drivers and accusing many of them of endangering national security!

The truckers’ strikes began on May 22nd, followed by a second strike on September 23rd. The drivers were protesting against the low level of their pensions and ‘hard labour’ wages, the relentless rising costs of parts like tyres, the low rates for each job they take on and so on. They also demanded to cut out middlemen. The strikes have included drivers and even lorry owners in dozens of cities including Tehran, Mashhad, Esfahan, Arak, Bandar Abbas, Qazvin, Kashan and many other important industrial and commercial cities.

The lorry drivers’ strike is yet another front in the class war besieging the Iranian capitalist class and its crumbling regime! A victory for the truckers will boost the struggles of all workers in Iran and help build towards a general strike!
